'tour de st.laurent!!' (Bike Ride over the St. Lawrence Seaway/River)

Today is Sunday, July 19, 2020,
and we wish Happy 14th Birthday to Claire Francine Low!!
July 23, Brad and Caylee celebrate their 16th Wedding Anniversary!!
July 25, Richard celebrates his 66th Birthday!!

And this will go down on our record for ‘fastest week’ yet!! I don’t think the ink is even dry on last weeks blog, but here we go again with a report on ‘Happenings and Miracles’ in the Canada Montreal Mission for this past week!

Monday meetings are always stimulating, and motivating, as we interact with our organized, enthusiastic, committed team! Our young Elders who replaced our Seniors are keen, bright, quick-witted, and pros at multi-tasking! All the administering we do is expedited because of both our young Elders Brown, Hawk, Nipko, and Pinkney, as well as our older gals Sisters Breckenridge, Little, and Mecham. It is their follow through with second and third mile efforts that make us look really good!!! We are so grateful for this amazing 7 missionary team!!

Big interviewing days Tuesday and Wednesday with twenty-four, and twenty-six interviews respectively. We love those visits with every missionary, and are so grateful knowing they are obediently putting their shoulder to the wheel, and trying their very best! It is overwhelming knowing we have missionaries that we are responsible for; from St. John’s Nfld., to Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, to Quebec City, Quebec, to Fredericton New Brunswick, to Ottawa, Ontario, with many spots in between, and, they are on their own…with daily/weekly contact from Zone Leaders, District Leaders, and Sister Training Leaders. As companionships they plan their days, and their weeks, set goals to teach, testify, and invite others to be baptized, all the while being 100% committed to keeping our Missionary Standards. We know the Lord knew we were going to have this geographically massive Mission, so He called missionaries who we didn’t have to worry about babysitting! It is remarkable!! Although in person interviews are our dream, we have found Zoom interviews have become a real highlight. That brief 15 minute interaction we each have is a moral boost for everyone. It is hard to always control my emotions as I hear sweet stories of their testimony-building experiences.

Thursday and Friday we had Longueuil and Ottawa Zone Conferences. ‘Faith to Find,’ our theme for this round of conferences was exactly what we all needed to hear. ‘Finding Faith in Myself to Find Faith,’ was my little twist on our theme, and we dissected Matthew 10:39 in our discussion. We are always so impressed with the understanding, and depth of our missionaries testimonies. Our teaching style is to ask questions, let the discussion build, validating comments, summarize, give a challenge, testify, and then close. Richard and I, along with zone leaders, sister training leaders, our assistants, and our social media teams all participated, and our five hour trainings flew by!

Yesterday was an amazing PDay!! Running, Baptism of Marie Daniele of the Valleyfield Branch and a breathtaking Bike Ride across the St. Lawrence River
filled our day to the very brim!!
This may sound like a travelogue entry, but I must record our huge adventure!!
About the second day we arrived in Montreal last year we drove across the brand new impressive Champlain Bridge which spans 3400 meters across the St. Lawrence Seaway/River, and boasts 8 lanes of traffic, with daily traffic around 159,000!! It officially opened July 1, 2019!!  Far below the 170 meter tall new bridge we noticed another bridge spanning the river, with BICYCLES zipping along, so, for a year we have been dreaming of finding time to make our own ‘Tour de St. Lawrence!!’ After the Baptism we loaded up our bikes into the back of the Highlander, drove to Atwater Market, parked, and began our 20 km. ride!! We joined probably 1000 other cyclists who easily maneuvered the network of beautifully paved, bicycle trails, and cheerfully cycled along! Dotted lines indicating bicycle lanes, lighting, and great signage were all very impressive! Families along the way cycled, roller-bladed, or walked. Three super cyclists with FRANCE team jerseys, and shorts were celebrities that zipped by us!! Although there were throngs of us cycling along, the well marked lanes kept us on our own side. There was a lovely breeze blowing off the river so although the temperature read 34 degrees, we kept hydrated, and it was so much fun!!

Faith Inspiring Miracles take over in the Canada Montreal Mission!!
Fredericton sisters:
« I've got a good miracle for you this week! Earlier on in the week, we were doing some good old Facebook finding. I came across a lady who had her family as her profile picture. As I looked at her and her young family, I thought for sure she was a member. Her family just looked like it. Turns out she wasn't a member. On Tuesday, i got a message from her. She reached out to me and started the conversation. She said she noticed we had a lot of people in common from the Wesleyan church she attended (that's the church we joined their bible study and taught in). She said she noticed i was a missionary as well and was so surprised by that! I later responded and talked about how I'm a missionary for our church and such. I asked how long she had been in the area and she responded with a one word answer and didn’t seem interested anymore. To my surprise about 2 hours later, she messaged me again and said she didn’t really know the difference between 'Mormon' and Christianity. And had never really met a Mormon before and to her surprise, she didn’t even know there was a ‘Mormon Church’ in Fredericton. As the conversation went on, she asked the most real questions ever! We ended up teaching her the entire restoration just by her questions. She even wants to learn more when she gets back from vacation with her family. It was super cool to kind of hear that she had never come in contact with any members of the church before, nonetheless it happens to be me and I'm a missionary! How neat is that?! «

Elder in Bridgewater NS:
« Ya know, I'll be honest president. It's been a great week. At least I feel great today. We've been in Isolation for around 4 months now and ya, I've had days just like the rest of everyone else where I was feeling down. But right now I'm just thankful to be a missionary. Thankful to have the Book of Mormon, and thankful to have the knowledge of the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ. It plays such a beautiful and major role in my life and it is my hope and prayer that when the distant (but inevitable) day does come that I do go home, that my habits and testimony don't slip and are where they need to be to set a upward trend for the rest of my life. I think this shift has been made within myself and just kind of accepting the situation and making the choice that even if I can't make it a good situation, I can still make it a good day.
Often times in my life I've found that being happy has much less to do with situations you’re in, and much more to do with you, choosing to be happy. »

LaSalle Sisters:
« Several miracles happened last week but my favorite miracle would have to be meeting Ugochi. At the beginning of going digital, I was constantly thinking how can I help others come unto Christ through technology. I remember telling myself that I would see the fruits not now but maybe in the future. I was able to see the fruits last week! About two weeks ago, I posted a picture and asked a simple question.

After a few days, someone commented on my post. I didn't realize that someone had commented on my post until a few days ago. I messaged her right away and we started having the best conversation! She right away asked me if we could be friends and I said why not! We talked about the word of God and sharing our love for God. We were talking back and forth until we set a time to talk via video chat. We video chatted with her on Friday! Sister S and I talked to her and just listened to how strong this amazing woman is! She had attended the church back in her home country and had been around members before. We talked and talked until she said something that touched my heart. She said, "I prayed to God a few days earlier asking Him for a friend. Then you Melanie messaged me. You were the answer to my prayer". It was powerful to witness that God still watches over us and helps us be the answer to someone's prayer even now!! She was grateful that I messaged her because now she has a friend of God to share the word of God. After our call, she told me that she began to dance because she was happy! When we had our last lesson with her, she kept telling the Sisters that we were best friends! I love her!

This has been a miracle of doing missionary work via technology. I asked Ugochi how she found our Facebook page. She told me that one day she opened her Facebook page and found my picture there and noticed that I talked about the word of God. She commented on my picture and I messaged her. After our first call, she started to look more into the page and stopped to watch a video that YSA Elders made. In the video they talked about the Book of Mormon and where did it come from. She told us that she took notes in this video! She showed us her notes that she took on this video. She read the scripture that they mentioned and it made sense to her. By this simple video, it opened her mind to learn more about the Book of Mormon. She has already gained a testimony of the Book of Mormon by watching a video of just 3 minutes.  «

Montreal West Sisters:
« We had a really cool experience with our new friend Andrew this week. He is so kind and sincere. Upon asking if he wanted to meet with us or asking if he would like to read the Book of Mormon, he responds "I would love to" It makes us so happy! We were teaching him about the Book of Mormon yesterday, and we were video calling from a room we aren't normally in. Even the fact that we were in the Laurier building is amazing because we used the Villa Marie building when I first got here. But just last month, we switched because of the Rahul Facebook situation. And because we needed the white boards to teach family home evening that night, we went to the Relief
Society room which we don’t normally use. As we started the lesson, Andrew stopped us and said "I know what room you are in" he later explained that he had met with missionaries years before in that very room! We had no idea! The Lord has been preparing Andrew for a long time, and He made all these events line up so that we would teach in that room. We use that church building, and we were assigned to teach FHE that night, we are in COVID so we would have a video lesson rather than in his home, we met him at just the right time, and Andrew was taught in this room years ago all because God is in control and he is in the details of our lives.  This was not a coincidence; it was only possible by the hand of God. We felt the spirit so strongly in that lesson. When Andrew described how he felt while talking about Christ, we identified the spirit and he replied "I believe that" it was a really spiritual lesson. Sister  bore the most beautiful testimony. She is really in tune with the spirit.  Her eyes filled with tears after we hung up, and we just had a really tender moment being grateful to God for the miracle he gave us. «

Ottawa Spanish Sisters:
« Hi President! I have honestly had the best week ever! We saw so many miracles this week! This guy called the church when we were there and said he wants to learn more about our religion, we have a meeting with him tomorrow! Then we went to drop off a bible at someone's house who responded to a bible ad on Facebook. We left our number in the bible and told him to call us if he has any questions. He texted us later and said that his Grandma just died from Covid and asked if we could give him a message of hope. We said we would love to and we are hoping to meet with him this week! I know that there are so many miracles everyday! I see God’s hand constantly in our work!  «

Sherbrooke Quebec Elders:
« This week was really cool! So since we've been in quarantine I've been doing some Family History and I found out that my 5th great grandmother is from Québec and she is buried in my area! So this last week I had the opportunity to go and visit her grave and see her headstone and the memorial on the back of it. It was a really cool experience!
One of our ward missionaries called us on Saturday and asked if we were free that night and we were luckily and he introduced us to one of his friends and the guy was interested in learning more which was really cool! We've been teaching a ton of members lately and it was cool to get a member referral!
Here is a little spiritual thought for you all!
Malachi 4:5-6:
"5 ¶ Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord:
6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse."

I love this scripture and my interest in family history has grown a lot during these last couple months. I know that families can be together forever and so it's up to us to help those in our family who haven't received the ordinances they need by taking their names to the temple! I hope you all have a great week! Je vous aime! «

Ottawa Spanish’ Speaking Sisters:
« We had a miracle filled Sunday.  First of all while we were at the church the phone rang and it was someone asking for the time church started. We continued talking to him, and turns out he was a nonmember, and we were able to schedule a video call with him this week. Then we delivered a bible and we left our phone number in the bible, and the person messaged us back saying that they are going through a really hard time because his grandmother had passed away. We shared our testimonies with him, and we were also able to schedule a video call with him. Then later that night the Elders called us and said they were walking through a park and a woman stopped them and recognized them as missionaries. She told them she used to meet with the Sisters and wanted contact with us again. It has been a really great week and we have some really progressing friends , and we are excited to have lessons with the potential people we found on Sunday. Overall it was a great week. »

Hochelaga Elders:
« Hello President! This week has been pretty good. We had a cool lesson the other day with a member couple. I remember me and Elder  prayed to know what we can teach to them and show to them that they need on their lives and we both thought that we could teach them about faith. It wasn’t really us teaching them; it was more of us having a discussion with them because they of course have experienced more and know what faith is. Point is, they were going through some challenges and our message was almost perfect for their needs. I see the Lord work through me and my companion. Although we can not do a lot of things we used to do, we are still able to do a lot of things we couldn't do which is opening new doors and better ways of helping Heavenly father share his gospel with all people who He has prepared. »

We are so grateful for the beautiful miracles our sweet missionaries are experiencing everyday. Their faith, determination, and hard work is evident. Our new normal and natural ways of doing Missionary Work revolve around little handheld telephones, and as you have just read, we are having miracles everyday, everywhere!! Peoples hearts are softening, and they are looking for ways to find peace. We know the Saviour is the Prince of Peace, and that the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ is the way we learn about Him, and His Plan of Happiness. Our knowledge and testimonies provide Peace, Joy and so much Hope, amidst crazy turmoil all around us.
We testify of this, and send much love to all!

Dad and Mom, Grandpa and Grandma, and Richard and Gayle

Keep Smiling!!! Have a wonderful week!!

"We are all just walking each other home"

Today is Sunday July 12, 2020
AND…
We are celebrating Baby BELLA ANNE KEARL’s Birthday TODAY!!
She was born at 10:46 this morning after two hours of labour!!!
7 pounds 2 ounces and 19 1/2”
Proud parents: Brendan and Megan Kearl and excited big sister Macie!
AND
Maxwell Jack Low celebrates his 10th Birthday on Thursday, July 16!!

Several readers have mentioned that the cute ‘Papyrus’ font I have used up to this point, in this blog is difficult to read… so I am experimenting with ‘Avenir,’ and hope for some positive reinforcement from those who gave the constructive criticism; if this font is suitable!!

It was another wonderful full-time missionary week, with Office Meetings all day Monday, Atlantic Canada Zone Interviews Tuesday and Wednesday, Atlantic Zone Conference Thursday, and Ottawa Zone Interviews Friday!! We conduct interviews at home, with Richard in our Office, and me propped up at the Kitchen table, with Zoom going on both Richard’s laptop, and my iPad. By the end of each day we are both exhausted, and exhilarated…how is that possible? We both find it so fun to see these amazing missionaries, chat for about fifteen minutes, and then give them each a big virtual hug!! I check up on their eating, their cooking, if they are drinking enough water, their exercise, how their families are back home, how things are going with their companions, and then I get a great report on who they are working with, who they have found, etc. etc. The time literally flies by, we are convinced our interviews are far more effective over the zoom!!

Pday yesterday was a lovely relaxing day. Exercise, Coordinating counsel meeting for Richard, hair colouring for me at Hair Town - a real salon, where the cute gal that cut my hair last week, knew how to colour my hair exactly the way I wanted it!! Watercolouring was our chosen relaxation activity, and Richard did a gorgeous Peggy’s Cove sunrise!! I’m still trying to specialize in flowers, and had fun with lilacs, anemones, poppies, roses, and apple blossoms! I love to sketch the flowers first, then outline with a fine pigma pen and then watercolour. Someone suggested that I omit the black pigma pen lining, so next time I’ll try that! It is a wonderful decompressing activity!!

Newfoundland District Conference was this morning, and we were delighted to Zoom meet with our dear friends all over..from St. John’s to Bay Roberts, to Gander, to Cornerbrook. It has been months since we were in Newfoundland, and we miss those great folks.  Richard and I both got to speak.
I love talking about ministering, and missionary work, and today I prefaced that, by teaching about covenant-keeping.

Here is the essence of what I spoke….
In Mosiah 18: 8-10 we are taught that inherent in our baptismal covenants is the command to take care of each other. How well are we ministering? One of my favourite covenant keeping stories happened in 1856 when the Willie and Martin handcart companies were stranded, freezing and starving on the high plains of Wyoming.  President Brigham Young heard about the awful plight of these faithful pioneer saints the day before October General Conference, and in his sermon to the Saints the next day he said, and this is taken from a Vaughan J. Featherstone BYU Devotional address August 11, 1981.
“I will now give this people the subject and the text for the Elders who may speak to-day and during the Conference. It is this, on the 5th day of October,1856, many of our brethren and sisters are on the Plains with hand-carts, and probably many are now seven hundred miles from this place and they must be brought here, we must send assistance to them. The text will be - to get them here! I want the brethren who may speak to understand that their text is the people on the Plains and the subject matter for this community is to send for them and bring them in before the winter sets in.”
“That is my religion; that is the dictation of the Holy Ghost that I possess, it is to save the people…This is the salvation I am now seeking for, to save our brethren that would be apt to perish, or suffer extremely, if we do not send them assistance.”
“I will tell you all that your faith, religion, and profession of religion, will never save one soul of you in the celestial kingdom of our God, unless you carry out just such principles as I am now teaching you.”

And then, those sweet obedient saints loaded up their wagons with supplies and went to the rescue. On the 30th of November again the saints congregated and President Young admonished the saints to prepare for the arrival of these same saints. He said:
When those persons arrive I do not want to see them put into houses by themselves; I want to have them distributed in the city among the families that have good and comfortable houses; and I wish all the sisters now before me, and all who know how and can, to nurse and wait upon the new comers and prudently administer medicine and food to them. To speak upon these things is a part of my religion, for it pertains to taking care of the Saints. . . .
As soon as this meeting is dismissed I want the brethren and sisters to repair to their homes, where their Bishops will call on them to take in some of this company; the Bishops will distribute them as the people can receive them. . . .”
“The afternoon meeting will be omitted, for I wish the sisters to go home and prepare to give those who have just arrived a mouthful of something to eat, and to wash them and nurse them up. You know that I would give more for a dish of pudding and milk, or a baked potato and salt, were I in the situation of those persons who have just come in, than I would for all your prayers, though you were to stay here all the afternoon and pray. Prayer is good, but when baked potatoes and pudding and milk are needed, prayer will not supply their place on this occasion; give every duty its proper time and place. . . .
Some you will find with their feet frozen to their ankles; some are frozen to their knees and some have their hands frosted. . . . We want you to receive them as your own children, and to have the same feeling for them.”   [Hafen, Handcarts, p. 139]
What an incredibly motivating story of ministering!! We will probably never be called to minister like that…but to keep our baptismal covenants…we DO need to minister.

‘A Heart Like His’ written by Virginia Pearce is one of my all-time favourite books, and I think it is probably because I felt a real gentle, but urgent stirring to strive to develop a Heart like His.  Although none of us will ever perfect our hearts, I have seen so many incredible examples of saints who are well on their way to developing those Christlike hearts.
Delivering cookies, bread or fresh cinnamon buns are great examples of sweet ministering, but ministering is so much more…Think what you have done to show love to those around you… here are a few examples…

  • Phonecalls to elderly grandparent, aunt, uncle or friend, and ask them to tell you a happy story of their childhood.
  • Read the scriptures over the phone to a shut in.
  • Sandy Burbank reads ‘Saints’ to Mom Low everyday!
  • Hospital window visit.
  • Singing outside the window of Grandma in the Hospital.
  • Nancy invited friends to go on a drive to Park Lake..they each brought their own bag lunch.
  • Invite a family for a picnic….you provide the picnic!!
  • Take a friend to visit their spouse in a longterm care facility.
  • Clean a friends bathroom.
  • Play a card game with a shut in.
  • Do a puzzle together.
  • Defrost your grandma’s, or a friends freezer.
  • Put a freezer meal in it when you are finished!
  • Weed a friends garden.
  • Teach children to paint rocks.
  • Jan spent the afternoon helping Nancy clean and organize her garage!
* Deliver a nutritious meal to someone in need.

Ministering is a daily habit, and as we pray for inspiration to know who to minister to we will be guided to those needing us.…it is covenant keeping at its best as we reach out in love to those around us.
I think the greatest blessing of Christlike ministering, of keeping our baptismal covenants is we develop a heart like His.

Our friends Elder Richard and Sister Camellia Smith who served in Gander Newfoundland had the sweetest little plaque in their home with these simple words:
“We are all just walking each other home…”

Fredericton Sisters:
« A completely inactive member just moved here from Nova Scotia. He comes from a very active family, his sisters husband is a bishop and his mom works in the temple every week! That's how active. Anyways, he is married to a nonmember. Oh and he has a name, its Stefan (I may have spelled it wrong). We called him on Thursday evening and left him a message. About an hour later, we were talking with the Moncton Elders and we got a call from Stefan. We hurried and grabbed the phone and answered. The call ended up being an hour long (maritimes, am I right?) And the entire time he just BORE HIS TESTIMONY to us! Keep in mind that he has been inactive since he was about 17 years old. He is in his late 40's now. To continue with the story, he kept bearing his testimony to us. In the middle of the call, he told us he wants to stop smoking. The only reason he never went to church was because he felt judged for being a smoker and a member. He said him and his wife want to stop smoking because his wife wants to be baptized. And that he wants to stop smoking so he can be a worthy priesthood holder and be able to baptize her. How neat is that?! We are going to start the stop smoking program with them soon hopefully!! I purely think this is one of the reasons I am still here in Fredericton. I feel it so deep in my heart and I am literally bursting with joy as I think of this beautiful experience. I have the deepest desire to help them and to love them! Within the first 3 sentences of our conversation, I had the most peaceful feeling come about me and I just felt so much love for this man and his wife. I knew right then and right there that I was supposed to be here. I like to think I was able to feel a bit of what Christ and God feel for them, the love that is. «

Victoria South Shore Spanish Sisters:
-« KIMVERLY GOT BAPTIZED!! it was such such an amazing day filled with so much light!!!! Ah it was crazy though, our friend Angela, that has been an awesome member fellowshipper for Kimverly, got back tracked by the bus that came 30 minutes later but hey better late than never! We were able to wait for Angela and we were all there just enjoying the wonderful spirit there. Both Kimverly and her husband just testified about how happy they were and how this step they were taking as a family would really bless their lives!! There were so many smiles at this special little pool baptism!! (poor Kimverly's daughter though, she REALLY wanted to go to the pool with her parents when the baptism was happening haha. She was like, where is my swimsuit mom?!?) Crazy thing too, right after the baptism, we the got news that we can now have baptisms INDOORS. So we got the super cool experience to be one of the last pool baptisms in the mission!! »

Victoria South Shore Sisters:
« Hi president!! Loving it here in Victoria SO MUCH!! The members are incredible, and it is so cool working off of member referrals!! We have also had a lot of member lessons and are getting to know our friends, which has led to some cool experiences. We are referring one really cool YSA guy to the YSA elders, and he has SO MUCH potential! He picked up interest thanks to the emails home from an elder here in the ward (one of his friends). AND THEN!!! We had 8 friends at church,, which was a miracle in and of itself and totally just thanks to the Lord doing his own work, and it is so cool to see the work progressing so much here. And to be so busy! In a lot of ways, this just feels like normal missionary work. »

Villa Maria (Montreal downtown)sisters:
« We had a sweet miracle this week. It was actually on Sunday. We started our Sabbath Day well, we were fasting so we were in a good spirit. We planned our day, had our personal study and joined our Ward Testimony meeting on Zoom. We had previously invited our amis to come to church, so we were hoping they would hop on the meeting. As we were listening to the testimonies being born, we received this message by our friend Delphine, in which she said that she was maybe going to come but she was unsure. It was okay for us, she was at work so we understand that she wouldn't really have time. However, when we started swiping the screen to see if any of our Amis were there, we saw her name! She was among us, listening. We were so happy. But that's not all! A short while after, we hear her voice, and see her face appearing on our screen. She had just unmuted herself and she was bearing her testimony! Incredible! I couldn't believe. President, that was probably one of the highlights of my week. She told her story and experiences, and she testified at the end about the assurance she has that God lives and that He listens to us. Our friend had just born her testimony to our ward and we were so amazed by her faith. Our bishop, and the whole ward said hi to her and said that she was welcome among them, among us! That was a miracle. «

We are grateful for so many miracles here, and, in your homes. And we are grateful for the many sweet acts of ministering you have performed for us, and for each other. Your goodness motivates us to do more, and do be better.  Remember: “We are all just walking each other home.”
With much love,
Dad and Mom, Grandpa and Grandma, Richard and Gayle

Read the Book of Mormon...MIRACLES will follow!!

Today is Sunday, July 5, 2020
What another wonderful week in the Canada Montreal Mission!! I probably sound like a broken record raving about our great weeks here, but they really are amazing!! Jam-packed with many meetings, and lots of interaction with missionaries!! Weekly key indicators do indicate how hard our team of missionaries are working; read on, and be impressed!!;   1 Baptism this week, 29 folks on date for Baptism, 69 friends at Church, and 25 new friends to teach!!! Such examples of hardworking, cheerful, obedient, consecrated missionaries! We couldn’t ask for any better!!

Our biggest goal as Mission leaders will be challenging to measure, and evaluate; but as we have discussed over and over again what we really want to achieve with our missionaries, we realize it has absolutely nothing to do with those key indicators, and everything to do with what happens in the hearts of these young adults, and that my friends, is what our goal is: to have every one of our missionaries committed to continuing on their own covenant path.  That is our 'Mission' Statement.  President Boyd K. Packer once said you could judge your effectiveness as a Mission President when you look at the grandchildren of your missionaries. What a long time to wait!!
So…every interaction with this stalwart team of ours, we preach, and teach about the power of the Book of Mormon, and how to create that covenant path by being disciples of Jesus Christ.
Daily, little righteous decisions, like reading the Book of Mormon, and praying are the keys.

Tuesday around noon we welcomed our three new missionaries - Sister Cook from Magrath, Elder Lee from Calgary, and Sister Maller also from Calgary. You can be sure that each group of new arrivals are welcomed with open arms….with our Canada/USA border still closed we are getting fewer and fewer missionaries so when any arrive, we celebrate!!! And we continue to pray that the border will open soon. Many, many apartments are still vacant, waiting for young or senior missionaries to arrive.

Interviews and meetings occupied much of our week. With eight departing missionaries; Sister Lazo, Sister Losik, Sister Mavy, Sister Rhodes, and Sister Wall; and Elder Bates, Elder Kennedy, and Elder Tung; we spent lots of time visiting with this outstanding group of CMM Alumni. Bag lunches were my simple solution to preparing a departing feast. I made big hamburger size buns, and loaded them with ham, turkey and mayo, and filled the lunch bag with potato chip bags, apples, celery and carrot sticks, granola bars, trail mix, and cookies. Because airports have closed their doors for spectators, we had the departers come to the Mission Home on Thursday afternoon for farewell hugs, and a goodbye visit. (and also to distribute their lunches!) Highlight Thursday night was our Zoom Testimony Meeting, which we never get through without using a pile of kleenex!  What an elect group of missionaries, and oh how we will miss them….As impersonal as Zoom seems, the miracle of our testimony meeting was that the Spirit was just as strong as if we had all been together in the Living Room. The Spirit is oblivious to technology, and comforts, testifies, and prompts anywhere, anyhow.  Certainly a lovely day and evening!

Sister Little planned a fun Canada Day/Independence Day celebration for Friday afternoon, and what a fun party!! Our board room was all decked out with cute red and white polka dot tablecloths and fun festive Costco summer plates; and food enough for fifty, although we only had twenty. Sister Mecham had made yummy potato salad with shrimp, and the cutest raspberry tarts with this little puffed pastry maple leaf set on top, and then garnished with cream and raspberry sauce to go on top of that!! (she had ordered the little maple leaf cookie cutter online!) Our American missionaries thought the American flag fruit pizza with blueberry stars, and raspberry stripes looked really festive!! Poutines the Elders brought were a big hit…AND, Richard’s two batches of homemade raspberry and lemon ice cream were the exclamation mark to the buffet, and stole the show!! We all loved standing and singing both National anthems!

Eight am sharp yesterday morning I met my Moroccan hairdresser, and her receptionist daughter named Moona, at the salon; a slick three minute drive from home. When she reported taking her training at ‘Laurier’ in Paris I knew she would be a big improvement over mine and Richard’s efforts!!  (I do hope we get to return to Nova Scotia soon so I can get back to JJ Choo!!) It feels so great to have a real haircut!! Richard’s very short Barbershop doo that he got on Friday looks great and will last at least a month!!

PDay theme yesterday was PLANTS!! That included spending three and a half hours exploring the 190 acres of an impressive collection of lush flowers, shrubs, and trees at the Montreal Botanical Gardens. I loved it all, but my favourite garden was the area groomed by arborists which was filled with manicured boxwood, and so many other neatly trimmed shrubs, and huge hardwood trees and thousands of colourful perennials. The 32 degree warm sun helped us get a little colour on our necks and face. And then to continue with our plant day, we ventured about 45 minutes to Laval, where we explored two more greenhouses, and found the three sky blue delphinium which I had been looking for, and dreaming about!! And now…we can truthfully say our 2020 'summer'-green-housing is complete!!

Last night we got to help Zoom teach our dear Nova Scotia friends Jim and Vicki Cameron…how grateful we are to have them as friends, and what a special opportunity to discuss ‘Come Follow Me’ with them!! Another reason to get back to Nova Scotia to spend time with them! Sisters Olsen and Pohjoisrinne, both amazing sisters,  are doing such a great job helping teach the Cameron’s!

Today we spoke in Montreal Mount Royal Stake Conference via Zoom - our first time doing Zoom Stake Conference, but it was great!! President Glowa from Champion is an amazing missionary minded Stake President,  and we are so grateful for his support. His Mom just passed away a few weeks ago, and he sweetly paid tribute to her, by sharing many of the things she taught him, like “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.”
“Be swift to hear and slow to speak.”
“Two wrongs don’t make a right.”
“The Lord helps those who help themselves.”
  “Remember who you are.”
  “Find Joy in the Journey.”
Having my Mom just pass away almost three months ago, April 19th, I got a bit melancholy as I thought about her one liners….”Keep Smiling,”and “Look at the View,” and “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.”

CMM Miracles for this week July 5th 2020
Miracles are all around…we just need to open our eyes, and hearts, and we will see and feel them….
Sister Rhodes who left for home on Friday shared this lovely little miracle with us just before leaving. Her travel itinerary was crazy…depart from Montreal fly to Vancouver- layover then fly to Denver, layover and then fly home to Boise. She was ready to call Church Travel to see if they could make it a little more direct, but when she and her companion Sister Nabrotsky were teaching a new friend, they started telling her about the crazy travel plans…AND if you can believe this…their new friend was on the very same flight to Vancouver!!!! SO.. Sister Rhodes knew it was a tender mercy and that the Lord had orchestrated it… she didn’t call Church Travel and prayed that she would have an opportunity to continue teaching and testifying to this new friend!!! We loved hearing that sweet story!!

Ottawa Champlain Spanish Sisters:
« We are also teaching a lady named Jennifer, she is so cool. We had given her a Book of Mormon a couple weeks ago and we were having a lesson with her and then she starts crying and she said she felt amazing, and we told her that that was the spirit! She said she loves reading the Book of Mormon because it is so different than any other book that she has read before. I see so much potential in her. I love being a missionary!  «

LaSalle Elders:
... »but we had quite the awesome week this week even with how spirit-filled it was! Before zone conference started, a family in the ward told us they had a friend and her husband wanted to be taught and baptised and we had a lesson with them on Friday. which was super awesome because the wife had read half of the Book of Mormon twice, and the husband has read though the whole thing! She was a referral 4 years ago and work kept her busy, but over those years, the spirit has done some work! and she is anxious to be baptised and she wants her husband to be baptised too. both of them have a lot of work that they do, the husband is a local truck driver and the wife is a nurse. but the members set up the lesson and helped us and it was great!
plus, Etienne turns 8 this month so we (if the spirit is right) will invite him and Michael to baptism.
Then Jay called us again! He told us about the wonderful member influences he has seen in his life and so if the spirit is right there, we may invite him to baptism too.
so i think that if we work hard enough and the spirit is right, Elder Noad and I set a goal for 5 baptisms this transfer! »

Fallowfield-Kanata Elders:
« Last night I think Elder Nelson's greenie fire came back. We had a lesson with a very cool lady named Lynley. It was our first lesson with her so we did How to begin teaching, taught her the restoration, and set expectations. The Spirit was VERY strong. I could tell Elder Nelson was nervous because of how much he was shaking, but it quickly turned into confidence and power. When he recited the first vision, All three of us were in tears. I pointed out to Lynley and said "What you felt right there was the Spirit of God!" And she humbly acknowledged it and said "Yeah. I can feel it." We finished teaching her, gave her a commitment, set up the next lesson, and ended with a prayer. After we ended the call, me and Elder Nelson just hugged each other and let out all of our emotions. This woman had been looking for the Gospel, and has finally found it. I assure you President, that it won't be long before she decides to be baptized as well! We are very excited for her!

Halifax sisters:
« Our first miracle of the week is that Christina put herself on date for baptism! She said that she also wants to get in contact with members who are like her (converts!) Which is so perfect we already have two members lined up and Julia as well! She has loved hearing Julia's testimony of her baptism and says that she is looking for the missing part to her life, and she believes it is here! We told her that it is here! We are excited to start teaching her! She came to church this Sunday, but she missed our lesson the other day, so we need to set up another appointment with her! »

Longueuil Sisters:
« Cool miracle! We were saying our goodbyes and dropping off cookies for a few friends and members, and when Soeur LePage (a way less active member) opened the door, she told us that our timing was insane because just the night before, she was reflecting on what her next steps should be with her spirituality and future. The spirit was so strong, and she wants to attend virtual church now!! »

What faith-building experiences we are having!!!!….Preparing ourselves daily, by consistently reading The Book of Mormon, by studying and praying are really, the only pre-requisites for having our own little miracles. It is as simple as that! How grateful we are for our sure knowledge of the Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which teaches about the Plan of Happiness!
The Atonement of Jesus Christ makes it all possible. Of this we know.
Have a wonderful week.
Sending much love to all
Dad and Mom, Grandpa and Grandma, Richard and Gayle

"Keep Smiling!!!" and  "Look at the View!!"
